Bavarian Force Structure

When the Imperial German Empire was formed in 1871, the Kingdom of Bavaria was its second most powerful state after Prussia. Notwithstanding that it was a member state, Bavaria retained elements of independence but in times of war its troops became subject to overall Imperial German command.

As a side note, the Bavarian monarchy was directly descended from the House of Stuart and were it not for the Act of Settlement 1701, the King of Bavaria would have been the successor to the British crowns.

The Bavarians therefore provide a significant part of the German invasion force.

In 1870-71 the Bavarians were part of the combined German Army that had defeated France in the Franco-Prussian War.  At that time they had provided two Corps for the German III Army and it is this Order of Battle (OOB) that guides the structure for 1875.

Given their success in France, the Bavarian troops are considered to be steadfast veterans.

On the wargaming table, units are scaled down from actual size to representative figures. For the purposes of BAD, the scaling is as follows:

  6 figures =  Field Command
12 figures =  1 x Infantry Battalion
  6 figures =  2 x Cavalry Squadrons
  6 figures =  2 x Artillery Batteries with limber*
  6 figures =  1 x Field Engineer Company

*Note that any fixed-in-position limber drivers are included in the count

The units that will form part of this project are highlighted in red in the 1870 OOB (click to enlarge):
